Edmonton pupil increases to be able to Oriole Experience

A great Edmonton senior high school student has came back from her trip of the Pacific on-board Canada’s Naval Tall Ship, HMCS Oriole.

Genevieve Berube was one of 15 students chosen across the country for the Canadian Student Leadership Association’s Oriole Youth Adventure Challenge.

She describes the trip as amazing.

“I would do it again if I could. I’ll probably apply next year.”

Berube was on the ship from April 8 to the 12 and was taught about the challenges of living and working in a sail training vessel.

Her days were spent helping the crew sail the ship.

“We would single up the lines that tie up to the dock. We would let go and drive out of the harbor. Then about an hour out we would set up the main sail.

“That was hard because it was really heavy,” she added.

Her nights were spent sharing space and stories with other students.

“There were eight girls and we all shared one section of the ship together.

“All throughout the week we learned new things about each other and it was really cool.”

Genevieve’s mother, Michelle, said her daughter has always loved boats and was considering a career in the Navy.

“I can see her being on a ship one day. She just sparkles. That’s what she likes.”

The trip taught Genevieve new leadership skills, ones she said will help her as she considers her future.

There have been additionally unique thoughts, such as viewing orca whales going swimming within the sea.
